What is your brand?
Whether you realize it or not, you have a brand.
It's not a logo. It's not a name. It's not a color scheme. It's not a slogan. And it's not a sign or a label or a hood ornament.
Ask most people (including all too many people in business) what their brand is, and they'd likely pick one of the things named in the last paragraph. And while those items can reflect your brand, none of them are your brand.
Think about some people you know: Joe is sloppy. Mary is very sarcastic. Bob can't hold his booze. Beth is the hardest worker you know. Marty is never late. And Izzy always is.
Those are perceptions you hold about those individuals, and those perceptions come to form their brand in the minds of their friends, families, and associates.
It's no different with companies: Company X can be relied on to deliver the best customer service. Company Y doesn't know the meaning of the words. And Company Z makes the best widgets on the market, bar none.
It may have to do with product or service quality. Or more correctly, it has to do with how those products and services and their quality are perceived in the marketplace.
BMW: "The Ultimate Driving Machine"
Avis: "We Try Harder"
Charles Schwab: "Talk to Chuck" ("Investors Talk. We Listen.")
Capital One: "What's In Your Wallet?"
Carnival Cruises: "The Fun Ships"
Wal-Mart: "Always Low Prices" (remember when it used to
be "Always the Low Price. Always"?)
Get the idea?
As you can see, brand can be good. Or bad. The real trick is bringing the perception in touch with the right reality. Or vice-versa. That takes self-awareness. And planning. And coordination. And making sure the customer gets the message. But get your brand right in the marketplace, and the result can be pure gold: Marketing gold.
